Which barcode?

Pick the right symbology.

Every barcode type answers a different question. These are the seven you'll meet in e-commerce and warehousing, and when to reach for each.

EAN-13

The retail standard outside North America — the 13-digit code on almost every product sold in the UK and Europe. Needs a GS1-issued number; the last digit is a check digit, which this tool calculates for you.

UPC-A

The 12-digit retail code used in the US and Canada. Technically an EAN-13 that starts with 0 — most scanners read them interchangeably.

EAN-8

An 8-digit short form of EAN for packaging too small to carry a full EAN-13 — cosmetics, confectionery, single-serve items.

Code 128

The workhorse of warehousing. Compact, high-density, and encodes letters as well as digits — the usual choice for SKUs, serial numbers, order references and shelf-edge labels. If you're labelling bins for Pickscan, use this.

Code 39

An older industrial format still common in automotive, defence and healthcare. Less dense than Code 128 — prefer Code 128 for anything new unless a trading partner demands Code 39.

ITF-14

The 14-digit code printed on outer cases and cartons — an EAN-13 with a packaging-level digit in front. Tolerant of corrugated cardboard printing, which is exactly where it lives.

QR code

Two-dimensional, so it holds far more — URLs, Wi-Fi credentials, whole addresses. Readable by any phone camera. Use it when a person, not a warehouse scanner, is the audience.
